Hello,
I am new in the mac world. I just got a macbook pro and I am wondering how necessary is to get an application to clean my mac. If so, what are the alternatives out there? thanx

there are a number of threads on this already. There's no reason to buy any extra programs. Some of them can overclean and you wind up with an unbootable system cause the program deleted a system file.

Just download onYx and call it a day. :) Free, works well, doesn't cause issues.. easy to use for non technical people.

You don't need any apps for "cleaning" your Mac. Mac OS X manages itself quite well with no need for user involvement. While you can use an app such as Onyx, it's absolutely not necessary for your Mac to perform at its optimum.
