Do I still have to encode? H265 on 16” M1 Pro 16gb - Premiere Pro

Hi all

I recently picked up the 16” MBP 16GB ram M1 Pro..

Im learning Video editing in Premiere and Filming with a Fujifilm X-T4 in H265 codex.

When I get the footage on the timeline (or preview), it stutters, freezes and generally doesn’t perform well. When I encode the footage to ProRes everything is fine.

I’ve watched a couple youtube videos and it seems that people are editing h265 without encoding the footage first? Is the encoding step implied and they aren’t explicitly calling it out? Should I be concerned and have my unit looked at or serviced?

Any insight is appreciated.
