I picked up an M1 13.3“ 16GB/1TB Pro last week - and when I did the purchase I put my Late 2016 15.6” Pro - 2.7GHz i7 Quadcore/16GB/512GB SSD up against it - worth £500 in the UK.

The question is do I actually send it off to Apple to get that refund or do I keep it?

The question here is one of size and windows which I am missing on the 2020 MBP BUT I don’t use Windows for anything. I haven’t had to use windows since 2017 for work and I don’t see why I would have to ever again. As for size I do have a 27” 5K LG so I can’t say I need 15.6” anymore (unlike when I got the 2016 MBP before I had an external display).

I suppose a part of me is reserved on the fact there are only 2 USB/TB3 ports and on the same side (Apple could have at least put them opposite sides!) but again on the move I’d only ever plug in power and maybe a USB thumb drive/camera connection and it‘s not like I can’t use the 3 extra ports on the LG display.

I think perhaps my last logical block here on trading in is if I decided to return the 13.3” Pro for any reason. Because then I would have no laptop at all... but I can’t see any reason why I would have to do that.

It is probably that I just feel guilty spending so much when I have a MBP.

BUT I have to say my 2016 MBP is so slow - even before I used the M1 Pro - it took forever to do anything. Editing any video clips in FCP was almost impossible even basic edits and the fan would turn on for pretty much everything.

I did a Geekbench 5 test on the 2016 MBP and got 869 single core, 3452 multi compared to my 10-core iMac Pro at 1148, 9460 and the M1 MBP at 1730, 7477.

YES single core the M1 is faster than my 10-core iMac Pro - however speed wise they feel the same doing single core stuff; multi core the iMac Pro is faster. But this shows how slow and unusable my 15” MBP is.

You can get a Thunderbolt or a USB-C hub/dock if you need more ports (or use ports on your display). If you mainly only need more ports when at home or at the office that can be a useful solution.

A lot comes down to whether the M1 runs all you need it to. If you have software that hasn't yet been updated to work on the M1 or requires a paid upgrade for a version that runs on the M1 that can affect the decision as to what to do with the old machine.

Everything I use works fine on the M1 with Rosetta at worst case.

I really don’t use Windows and to be honest if I needed Windows I could just put boot camp on my iMac or buy a very cheap Windows machine. But I can’t see any reason I’d need Windows.

I think I’ll send it to Apple and get that trade in. Really the only thing I’ll miss is the 87W USB-C charger. As the 13” has a 67W one.

Is there something slowing down your 2016 MBP? I have a mid-2012, 2.9 Ghz i7 with 8 GB of RAM that functions well after a SSD upgrade and a RAM replacement in 2017. I do heavy multitasking with numerous applications/tabs, but not video editing.

You have a neice or nephew that could use it?
Not sure how tax laws work in your country but maybe you can donate it and get a tax credit in excess of the 500?

I decided to just trade it in - but I appreciate the advice.

In terms of it being slow video editing is what kills it also that butterfly keyboard which needed to be replaced as I have dead keys. It was fine for everything else but it is just very slow next to the M1.

I mean if you haven’t tried an M1 Mac it will blow your mind how quick it is. Even on Rosetta.
