The System pref Java tells me I need to update from Build 131 to 161. I just tried to download the update and there was an extreme delay in the download, so I quit the download.

On the System Pref/Java control panel it asked me to push a button to down load in the system pref window, but nothing happened.

Do I need the 161 build for java, or do without?

I'm running build 161. If I was you, I'd definitely install the latest java update for security reasons alone.

I'd consider waiting till September before moving to Java 9. The final release of Java 9 was just a few weeks ago and judging by the history of security fixes and bug fixes that version 8 went through, waiting until Java 8 no longer receives updates in September will give version 9 time to iron out any issues that may pop up. Here's a link to wikipedia with more info on both versions: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_version_history#Java_SE_9

It's also worth noting that when launching OS 10.3.3 system preferences, the Java panel, after checking with Oracle, shows build 161 as being up to date.
