Down south
Son lost his phone, and needs a replacement. My options are either get him an XR to replace his XS because it’s cheap, OR give him my 11 and get myself an 11 pro max.

I had an XS Max and returned it because I felt the OLED was bothering my eyes/head, so I’m a little leary of trying again with OLED, but I would REALLY appreciate having a larger screen.

So I’m torn, and I need the collective opinions of all of you to make up my mind for me. ;-p

You couldn't pay me to use a max sized phone but there's others that feel the opposite. If the 11 Pro didn't bother you I would think the 11 Pro Max wouldn't either.

I don’t have an 11 pro - just an 11. But I have mostly had plus size phones since they started making them, so I know the size will be fine for me - just not sure about the OLED.

Your son will appreciate the 11 over XR and will have a year longer longevity while you’ll get the upgraded screen size and quality and slightly better camera. Win Win.

if you didn’t have to upgrades your sons then it wouldn’t be worth it but since your in that position, I would move up not down.

A year from now you’ll feel glad you did I bet. As long as money isn’t an issue.

If the OLED screen bothered you before, it's likely to again. Still if you want to try it, now is a good time. With the holiday return period, you have three weeks or so to try it out.

I say make the best out of a bad situation and treat yourself.

My eyes were somewhat uncomfortable at first but it’s fine now, took a while but I’ve finally adjusted.

I would get him the cheapest one, he might lose it again, but that's just me

Well he’s 24, so he SHOULDN’T be having these issues, but obviously he is. And the only thing is, I already have Apple care on my 11, but I do NOT have the theft/loss on it because I didn’t figure I would need it for myself.

Yeah I think he’ll like the 11. He had an XS, so the screen will be a slight downgrade, but I think he’ll appreciate the size of the phone. Frankly he’s lucky to get one at all, so I’m not really fretting over it.

Yeah I’m worried about that, although I didn’t give it very long last time because I panicked, so I might would get accustomed to the change.

Ah, I obviously didn't read carefully! If you get the 11 Pro I hope you're able to enjoy it. I love mine.

If you already have AppleCare and decide to give him your 11, Apple might be able to add theft/loss on the phone. Might be worth it, since he’s already has a history of loosing phones.

If you would of said 20 yrs old or younger son I'd say give him your 11 but, since he's 24 I would make him purchase his own device. He'll have a vested interest in keeping an eye on the phone and not be careless with it if he has some skin in the game. If you want to buy a new Pro Max for yourself I'd offer him the phone at a fair price and having AppleCare+ is a nice freebie to sweeten the deal

Personally, I think your son should purchase his own iPhone at that age. But then again, maybe instead of a new device, I would maybe consider used/refurbished, to save some money.

Well, he does pay for his phones. We all (me/all but one of my adult children) still just share an unlimited package with ATT, and typically do NEXT plans, but they all pay their part of the bill. And he’s not positive if he lost it, or if it was stolen/picked up. When we did “find my iPhone” it showed that it was offline, and gave no last location or anything like that.

So your adult son can't take care of the things you buy him and expects another freebie? Yeah. If it were me, I'd buy the absolute cheapest used iPhone I could find and call it a day. That, or just tell my adult son to buy his own damn phone. Lol

Although I really do LOVE this sentiment, because I’m definitely not about catering to my kids like that, see the response above.

Anyway, my final decision was to just let him get a new 11, and keep my 11. In the end I just couldn’t make myself go through all the crap required to change phones right now.

I would’ve had to order and wait on a new case and screen protector, backing up, restoring, erasing, and dealing with all the changing of SIM cards and the crap that almost always entails, not to mention paying hundreds more for a phone when I’m really perfectly happy with the one I have.

I also already had a case for an 11 since I had to buy one when I got my 11 to hold me over until my Loopy arrived, and screen protectors (always keep a stash).

And finally, I’m set to where I can upgrade when new ones come out in 2020, and if I get one now, my upgrade plans will be all screwed up.

And this is how I justify things in my mind, if anyone gives a crap. ;-p

I really don’t believe at PWM disease, but on a line of principle, if you had issues with the XS Max, you are going to have the same issues with an 11 Pro Max.

Why yes, yes you do. No comparison if you want the best phone available.

Enjoy.

I would personally give him one of the Samsung AXX series as it seems to be a good value for what you get.

If he doesn’t like it, he shouldn’t have lost his iPhone.

Would definitely opted for the Pro Max, or any other OLED phone, i had the 8 plus and the Max at the same time, and the OLED screen of the Max i so much more vibrant. I myself bought a Xr for my 9 year old daughter with a 24 months contract because it was almost the cheapest option when it comes to iPhones, an iPhone 8 was only less cheaper(5€ per month).
