Do iPad and iPhone versions of the same Game interact?

I've been a long time ipod touch user, just picked up a used 16gb iPad. If I buy the 'HD' versions of apps like reckless racer and Real Racing be able to communicate (either over BT or wireless?) with the iPhone equivalents? Or should I just run the iPhone version on the iPad (which is what I plan to do with the majority anyways)?

For example, would someone on my iPad playing Real Racing HD be able to race me on my ipod touch playing Real Racing over bluetooth?
