Hello everyone, I‘m quite disappointed that Apple didn’t built ProMotion into the new Studio Display and I am considering going for a 4k 144hz gaming monitor for the time being.

I know that when the new Mini LED MacBook Pro’s were released, apps such as Safari didn’t support 120 hz scrolling out of the box and required a software updated.

Did this software update provide a universal fix for the low hz-issue and can I now enjoy smooth scrolling on any monitor, or has this only been fixed for the ProMotion MacBook Pro’s?

Update: I was able to test this myself with a 144 hz monitor at a retail store: Using a Thunderbolt 4 to DisplayPort 1.4 Adapter on a M1 MacBook Air I was able to run the external monitor at high refresh rate perfectly. Smooth scrolling in apps also works like a charm, so this is apparently not a feature restricted to Apple displays and ProMotion. One warning though: You need the right cable. It doesn’t work with display port cable version lower than 1.4. I didn’t test HDMI though I assume it won’t work given that MacBook Pro’s don’t have HDMI 2.1. Thunderbolt to HDMI might work though.
