Do Not Disturb iMessage group chat

Has anyone gotten this to work? Im in a group chat with a few people and we are all on iOS 8. I put the thread on Do Not Disturb and I'm still getting notifications.

What type of notifications sound or visual?

If my phone is locked it still lights up and shows the notification on the screen. If I am using my phone I still get a notification for every message that drops down from the top. I was under the impression that DnDing a thread would make it so I do not receive any notifications for that group chat. That is what it says right below the switch in the group chat details.

I noticed I still get the banners, but haven't noticed it light up my lock screen. I was thinking it worked like the regular DND mode, where you still get a notification on the lock screen but it doesn't light up or make a sound.
