Agilebits/1Password released version 7.9.9 today and remove the biometrics access in Safari. No more TouchID or FaceID to unlock the Safari extension. They say it is because of the latest iOS 16 that they had to remove the feature.

A rep said the followings:
With the latest iOS 16 update, 1Password has temporarily turned off Touch ID and Face ID in Safari due to changes in the user flow and experience. Biometric sign-in across all other devices and browsers other than Safari will remain the same. 1Password understands the importance of biometrics, namely the security and convenience it offers our customers. We would like to bring back this feature one day and are working closely with our partners at Apple to figure out how to make that happen.

This change only affects unlocking the 1Password Extension on iOS for Safari using Touch ID or Face ID, and you can continue to use biometrics to unlock 1Password when tapping "🔑Passwords" or "🔑" above your keyboard.

We used WebAuthn with 1Password for Safari to enable you to use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock. The changes to WebAuthn in iOS 16 don’t align with our security model and aren’t compatible with our implementation of WebAuthn. Consequently, we’ve removed this feature for now.

Honestly…! This is like when they removed access to 1Password from the share sheet. Everything was working fine. Then they update the app, and remove the feature without any prior mention of it. Their reason was the same as this time, the arrival of the new iOS (15 at the time)!

Now this is the same. iOS 16 has been in beta for months, and everything was working just fine. Then, oh, WebAuthn has changed. Bollocks. This is just a boat load of rubbish. Suddenly after all these months, WebAuthn has changed last minute? As if as a developer, and a big one at that, 1P did not know about changes in implementation or whatever changes Apple might want to make with WebAuthn!

Give me a break!

And look at the version number 7.9.9! What? Are they suddenly going to use a fourth digit, when they never ever did before, and make a 7.9.9.1?! Please…

They must really think that users are just not very intelligent.

I am going to say it :

They are voluntarily crippling the app 1P7 to make people upgrade to 1P8.

They can spin their PR speech like they want, but this is what it is.

Also, according to multiple posts on their forums, 1P8 is a disaster!

I do share your disappointment in the removal of the Safari functionality, but software versions are not decimal. If there’s another update to 1Password 7, it could be 7.10, or 7.9.10. There’s no need to add more digits to increase a software version.
(The biometrics function in Safari is also removed in the 1Password 8.9.5 update released today.)

I agree, but when you look at their iOS release history, they never go above 9.

Version 8 will be fine. However, I have reservations about 7.9.10 or 7.9.9.1.

Obviously, 1Password 8 is an entirely different product so the 7.x line will never change to be 8. I guess Apple’s operating systems version 10.10 through 10.15 must have really bugged you.

I never said that. 1P8 will be fine as in they will update 1P8 with biometrics again whenever that may be since they just release the new version.

As for 1P7, my reservations are as in I doubt they will release anything after 7.9.9.

And I say the above because if you look at this page https://app-updates.agilebits.com/product_history/OPI4, you will see that they have never released any kind of version that go above 9. So whether it be 7.10, 7.9.10, 7.9.9.1, that would be a first ever.

I bought v7 standalone. Then they pushed 1password for cross device sync. I bought their subscription but recent v8 and lots of issues in use pushed me away. Today, I switched back to bitwarden.

1P8 had the safari functionality disabled also, so I don't know what you are on about. If it was about forcing everyone to 1P8 then they could have just released version 8.0 as a upgrade to 7 instead of having two separate apps.

Considering the extremely sensitive nature of the data their app is handling, I don't mind the over abundance of caution taken toward disabling features that are suddenly not as secure due to iOS changes. If you think this company -- who you've implicitly trusted to handle your PASSWORDS -- is lying about the security of their app, you should probably delete it immediately.

What I am on about is that whilst 1P8 will be updated eventually. 1P7 probably will not see any other update.

Also, all those people who have been using 1P on iOS had the same problem since the beta of iOS 16. This problem did not appear yesterday. That would mean this app has been insecure for quite a while.

They also have a TestFlight app that I have been using, and they have not disabled anything out of precaution. Say they did not want to touch the public version, why did they leave the TestFlight untouched?

When you choose to test beta software there is always an implied degree of insecurity, thats part of the risk you accept. In your case you were running beta software for beta software.

The fact that there is still a testflight implies that they haven't decided to kill 1P7 support (yet). But I'll say it again, if you think these guys are just straight up lying you should not be trusting them with your passwords and whatever other personal information you have stored in their app.

Does anyone have the App Store build number version for 1Password 7.9.8? I made the mistake of updating to 7.9.9 and would like to revert back to 7.9.8 but need the build number version to re-download the older version from the App Store. I've looked up 1Password through the Tools Lantency site but they only have info up to version 7.9.1, which was released over a year ago. That's a little too far back so I'm hoping someone can provide the App Store build number version for 7.9.8.

BTW, the most baffling thing is their decision to disable biometrics for every version of iOS once you update the app to 7.9.9. Their explanation is they don't want to be a reason not to update to the latest iOS and they want a consistent user experience for the app. People have pointed out some have devices that CAN'T be updated to iOS 16 so why should their 1Password be degraded? So far, the developers are silent on that observation.

Anyone else having problems getting 1Password 7.9.9 to work at all with iOS16 and a vault on Dropbox?

I just upgraded to iPhone14Pro / iOS16 (from 7P/iOS15). After I authorize it to sync to my existing vault in DropBox, the 1P app doesn't seem to sync - the syncing icon in the menu spins forever the Last Sync status seems to forever show "in progress". Never seen this happen before under iOS15. I've already tried deleting the 1P app and starting over several times, but same problem. Furthermore the 1P app randomly crashes and locks up - sometimes in mid-keystroke the screen freezes when trying to type in the Master Password or when simply trying to navigate through the app

edit: never mind, solved my own problem with a bit of help from 1P support. Turns out 1P on the new phone was somehow hanging when trying to initially sync to my existing vault on Dropbox. By resetting the Dropbox data it created a clean copy of my vault on Dropbox which could then be sync'ed correctly to the new phone
and other devices.

I haven’t ever used the extension yet. I click on the password area, 1Password pulls up, unlock, and autofill Just like the pre-extension days.

Signed up just to comment here.

1Password developers have released several updates since this thread, including one, which brings back biometric unlock (Face ID and Touch ID) for 1Password 7 users.

Update 71000001 was released on October 31, 2022.
