Do or Die? Video Editing Rig

I have done a HUGE research and found on most video editing forums that the ONLY was for me to go is buying the new QUAD macs to keep up with todays editing programs and to "render" at fast speeds. So I am on the verge of buying an i7 and building it myself and going Hackintosh. Need more advice. Thanks

Without more information, I'd describe your post as saying that you can't afford the top of the line iMac or a Mac Pro, so you are hoping to build a comparable performing system with many fewer dollars.

A simple Google search suggests these two sites are good Hackintosh resources; Hackintosh.com, OSx86.

I think the following general advice will go triple for a Hackintosh user; If you are in the middle of a professional job, do not upgrade your system unless absolutely necessary.

I can't recommend a hackintosh at all for serious editing. If you are a hobbiest who likes to tinker and don't work on hard deadlines knock yourself out. If you feel you need the fastest machine possible in order to edit you are putting your focus in the wrong place. Just to give you some perspective there are still G4s and G5s in Hollywood editing content that gets broadcasts nationally. Does that mean I recommend getting a G4 or G5? No, but people who do this for a living don't put machine speed above all else.

you should look at storage as well, no point having a fast mac and running of a slow disk.
