I've just used iPhoto '08 to organise all my photos into events and albums. I also have iTunes set to sync my iPhoto library to my iPhone.

What I want to know is if a photo exists in 2 or more albums, will 2 actual copies of the .jpg file be move to my iPhone and take up twice as much space?

For example I have a 1MB photo my son in the album "Ross", taken at Edinburgh Zoo. The exact same photo is also in the album "Edinburgh Zoo". Will 2 copies of that photo be synced to my iPhone and take up 2MB?

It shouldn't; just like a song in multiple playlists won't be transferred twice. Simple test: Clear all the pics off your phone, then sync two albums with the same picture. check how much room pictures are taking on the phone.
