Is there any evidence that these products prevent shattering of glass from a fall? I have both a screen guard and case right now, but really prefer without the case. Like everyone else, Im worried without a case, it will shatter. But I have a few friends that swear putting the screen guard can prevent some (not all) instances of shattering from a fall. Anyone have any experience with this?

It may help a little bit with shattering but, IMO, what a screen protector will mainly do is keep the pieces from falling out and allow you to still use the screen without cutting your fingers. This will also help protect the digitizer from getting damaged by debris.
It's pretty amazing how the touch screen can be completely spider-webbed and still work perfectly.
