I was thinking about buying a pair of the $29 lightning EarPods from apple. I do have a question, compared to the EarPods with the 3.5mm connector, do the lighting EarPods have improved sounds? I thought I read that plugging headphones in the lighting connector offers better sound.

No, they won't offer better sound unless Apple improved the quality or design of the actual driver (speaker) system. Lightning itself has no impact on the sound quality. It's all in the design of the device connected to it.

Or, if Apple put a better DAC in the lightning Earpods than was in the iPhone 6s and earlier models. I highly doubt that is the case though.
