Unless I'm mistaken, aren't these types of "promotions" more or less scams?

I don't mean that a participant will most definitely NOT receive a "free" iPhone, but the way I understand it, the conditions for such an event to take place are pretty elaborate and involved. This article gives is a pretty good example of what they are like, as far as I understand it.

I don't know, call me crazy but I don't really associate such a fine place like MacRumors with such iffy advertisements. Maybe this is just part of arn's master plan to get us to contribute.

I'm pretty sure Arn just subscribes to ad services. He's removed "bad" ads before on request. If he doesn't respond to this thread, you might just PM him. I don't think it's part of any evil master plans. ;)

These things are pretty dumb if you ask me.

You have to find a ton of people to sign up as well, and then half the time your/their referrals/credits wont go posted, so no free whatever for you.

those Ads are only half scams. they mislead you more than they trick you. if you do what they tell you, you will most certainly receive the product.

but if you don't, then they screw you pretty hard.

Ah yes, those ads. "There's no such thing as a free iPhone" or really anything. All you have to do is subscribe to 10 of these services, which cost you money, and then we'll give you a free iPhone that isn't even for sale yet. Isn't it also sorta weird that there are Dell/Msft ads on MR? (I know some of us use Windows, so it's sorta justified)

This is a computer oriented site, and Windows is kind of the dominant computer OS...

Makes sense to me.
