So when you setup an account on your Mac for the first time, it defaults to make your short user account name your first name (or sometimes email address). But for whatever ridiculous reason, Apple decided it would be better if this were lower-case!

This means that when opening a Finder window, your home folder is completely mismatched from every other item in the sidebar. So, are you someone like me — someone who changes this and capitalizes it before it's too late? Or am I just crazy?

Absolutely, YES. I hated it when OS X did that the first time. I actually did a complete reinstall not knowing how to change it at the time.
That's just me...

Nope. I've always preferred that my user names, and for the most part directory names in general, be all lowercase. I actually never noticed that my finder's sidebar was 'wrong' until I read this thread.

...and it will now forever burden you. LoL.

Same with me…although most of the time I am quite organized.

I did not capitalize because I am OCD about the username@machinename being all lowercase. It's a UNIX thing.

Apple doesn't make your short username lowercase. You have the opportunity to make it whatever you want.

Mine is capitalised, not because I'm obsessive, but because I capitalise names. It's one of those rules I learned in elementary school.

Yes, however they use a lower-case short name by default. Those who are new to the Mac (or don't know any better) will just accept this, only to discover that their Finder windows are now completely off.

YES! And the caps in the terminal won't bother you if you also use caps in your hostname....

Code:
Jasons-MacBook-Pro:~ Jason$

I can see why though, *nix tradition says short names are lower case...

I laughed a little at "are now completely off". :p I didn't notice it was lowercase until I read this thread.

How do you change this safely?

I went into Accounts under System Pref., and right clicked on my User. This gives me the option of changing it, but I am afraid to go ahead and do it.
