It’s was 2016 when apple brought out the iPhone 7 Plus with 2x zoom, so it’s now 3 years old.

There’s rumours that Samsung are putting a periscope and having at least 5x optical zoom in the S11 and with Huawei likely to up it further next year, hopefully Apple will provide some competitor in this area and not leave it until 2021.

If I had to guess, I would say that at least a third of my outdoor shots are taken with the telephoto lens, so yes, I would definitely appreciate an upgrade to optical zoom next year.

Extended zoom requires a tripod to prevent hand shake that may even be too much for OIS/EIS so it defeats the purpose of using a compact phone in the first place. If I have to carry a tripod might as well use a DSLR.

Not necessarily: you can use walls, poles or any other stable supports to improve your stability.
