I just FileVaulted my MBP, and it runs great.

I also am encrypting my Time Machine Backup's on an external hard drive, and notice that TM backup's are now taking considerably longer; is that normal?

It spends a long time on Preparing Backup"

Thank you

I think many people have encrypted their TM backups, though I haven't (I probably should). I would think it would take longer as it needs to encrypt your data as its getting backed up. The backup procedure is no longer just a straight copy from the computer to the external drive as it needs to encrypt each file (AFAIK)

I am not sure how Time Machine works. But as I see it other people should not have access to my files. Whether it is my external hard drive or my computer doesn't matter to me. So yes, I have encrypted my external hard drive :)

I encrypt my external HDD's and the TM backups. The backups take no longer to run than when they were unencrypted before; at least, no difference that I can discern.

Backup's are normal now; it was the initial encryption that took so long.

Thanks again guys, and Happy New Year
