Not sure what the best course of action is to preserve my battery life when I'm just using my laptop at home.

Don't over think it. Plug it in when your home and if you take it out then use the battery.

The only time you shouldn't leave it on charge is when your away for extended periods.

Agreed. Just use the darn thing. You'll probably get 4-6 years out of the system before you have to replace the battery.

If one is concerned i think the idea is to charge it to 60% or so and turn it off if you're going to be away from it for long periods.

Heres what I do....

I have school on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I charge to 100% the night before (Monday and Wednesday night). After school I usually have 50-70% if I don't have an opportunity to plug in at school. The rest of the week when I'm not at to school (Friday-Monday) I keep it unplugged at my desk. If i use it for homework or just using it in general, I plug it in while in use, then just unplug when Im done.

I've kept mine plugged in for 4.5 years. I travel with it maybe 6-7 times a year but otherwise it is plugged in. My battery health says 84% after those 4.5 years.

May I ask how you check the health of your battery? My rMBP is only a few months old but it'll be good to check in the future :)

My 2011 MBP is plugged in nearly 100% of the time. I think the longest it's been on battery was the two times it was in for repairs.
