I want to buy a 16gb 4G new iPad for my mom for Mother's Day (I know I'm thinking ahead) because she has no computer and she seemed to enjoy my iPad 2 when I had it. Well, where she lives there is pretty much an open wifi to connect to, and I think she could use that most often. But I want to buy her the 4G model just in case.

Can you buy the 4G iPad and not activate the cellular data until a later date when you need it? Or do you have to activate it at first, and then cancel afterward? Thanks

You don't even have to activate it. Or you can only have activated on the months you need it.

you won't have to activate it. turn cellular data off and it will function just the same as the wifi model. If you don't have active data and haven't turned cellular data off, it will keep asking you activate service.
