Carrier Do you have to already be an AT&T Next user?

My current phone is on a former 2 year contract but I am now eligible to upgrade. But I have never been an AT&T Next user. Can I now buy the new phone on Apple.com using AT&T Next? Or do I need to do something with AT&T first?

you can just buy as normal. the only upgrade option you'll have is att next

Same. Called and was told to proceed as normal. You will keep your plan but have to choose an installment plan. No more discounted phones
