Do you have to be the primary account holder for discount ?

I tried ordering two iphone 4S 32Gb this morning but sprint asked me for a $200 deposit. Instead, I got the family plan under my dad's name to avoid the deposit. Would sprint let me add 23% student discount even though I am not the primary account holder?
