Do you have to have location services enabled for remote wipes?

I've heard that my device can be remotely wiped if it's lost and stolen, which is great. I'd like to disable location services altogether, though (would be nice if I could enable it on a per-session basis for Maps only, but that doesn't seem possible). Does the "Find my iPhone" location service need to be enabled for remote wipes to work? I don't see why this would be the case, but I suppose it's possible.
