If you buy an iPhone, do you have to pay for the phone service, or can you use it without paying?

In order to use an iPhone it must be activated by purchasing an AT&T 2 year service contract.

An iPod touch can be used without buying anything extra and would provide the same features as this theoretical iPhone without the AT&T phone plan/service.

At least that is Apple's Line.... not exactly what happens in the real world.

You can easily- and quite quickly- activate an iPhone, and use all that is on it with WiFi, just like an iTouch. Or you can drop in another company's SIM card, and use it on your existing plan, and never go near ATAT if you care to.

So, yes, there are OTHER options- just not official ones.
