Do you have to reformat a disk to use new APFS features?

APFS is still a work in progress and is getting updates.

So.... if I formatted an external disk with APFS some time ago and Apple updates APFS with new features, do I have to reformat to take advantage of them?

For example an update was made to APFS to help performance on spinning disks.
