Run on battery whenever you need to and plug it in whenever you can. You can plug or unplug any time you need to, regardless of the charged percentage, and you never need to completely drain your battery. Just make sure you don't run on AC power exclusively, as your battery needs to be used regularly to stay healthy. The link below should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions. If you haven't already done so, I highly recommend you take the time to read it.

I ALWAYS keep mine unplugged. I just charge it up to 100% and use it to 0%. 99% left and 150 cycles.

There is no need to run on battery all the time if you have AC power available. Also, discharging to 0% is not good for the battery. Read the FAQ I posted earlier for tips on maximizing battery health and life.

I had a 2008 MBP that I had plugged in all the time and that killed the battery. With my 2011 MBP, I only plug it in when I need too and once it hits 100%, I unplug it.

It's ok to leave it plugged in after it's fully charged, as it stops charging. It cannot overcharge. It's fine to run on AC power a lot, as long as you're regularly running on battery power.

Thanks for the info and the link i will read the tips when i get a chance, so from all the comments i take it i can keep it plugged in to AC all the time as long as i unplug it and use it on battery only once in a while

is that on windows pc's the same? that they stop charging?
I think it depends on the manufacturer. All Apple notebooks stop charging when they're fully charged, even if left plugged in.

Exactly. I recommend running on battery for a few hours every few days.

i keep mine plugged in most of the time as its my main machine.

I have had it from new since release and its on 98% health and 18 charges.

That's not what the Apple store said when I brought in my 08 MBP. They actually said that if you went around the store and unplug the laptops that had been there for awhile, they would die within a matter of minutes because they are always plugged in.

The key word is "always". It's not because they can overcharge, which they can't. It's because they don't exercise the batteries on the floor models.

The issue isn't if the laptop will overcharge or not. The issue is will it affect battery life and the answer is yes.

Yes, it can negatively impact battery life if you leave it plugged in all the time. It will not hurt to leave it plugged in after it's fully charged, as long as it's not plugged in all the time.

The last sentence of his reply says "as long as you regularly run on battery".....
