When you are not tethering, do you leave the switch on (under settings -> general -> network)? Thanks!

You can turn it on always but it wont have the blue unless your actually tethering

Yes but thisisarcadia mentioned that they even have it hooked up to the computer which I interpret to mean that the iphone is connected to the network over bluetooth. When I do that, I get the blue banner even if I'm using wifi on my computer.

I have it under my network settings even though I went back and restored my iPhone as I will never use it. So, no.

I just tried this:

-tethering option on
-computer on and connected to wifi (transmission is d/ling)
-plugged in iphone

Within a few seconds the blue bar start flashing at the top of the iphone screen.

I guess I won't be leaving it on.

Why whats the problem?

On my Mac, I am connected via Ethernet, it is the first priority for internet, then my iPhone. Never touches the iPhone for internet, unless I physically disconnect the Ethernet cable.

The blue bar doesn't bother you?

I find it dumb that we cant tether over wifi.

If your iPhone can use Wi-Fi in that instance, then most likely there's a wi-fi source, and your laptop could use that source, or I guess if you had a desktop you could do it, but the whole beauty of tethering is when you're in your car (someone else driving) with a laptop and you're tethering.
