Got someone at work who only has Linux machines at home. He wants to know if he needs Windows or OS X to use an iPad at home (for his daughter actually).

I never really thought about it when I bought mine and immediately connected to my Mac. So would they have a over priced paper weight if they don't have access to iTunes through a PC/Mac?

Yes, you need access to iTunes, to activate it when you first plug it in.
A new ipad just shows a picture of the itunes logo with the usb cable.

Plus you'd need itunes to sync/backup and add music/videos.

Maybe iTunes under WINE on Linux; never tried; but maybe works ... or a quick VMWare (or similar) setup to get temporary a Windows running ...
