Do you need two external drives for storage when using Mac

One for timemachine backup, and one for exFAT to use with Windows?

As I understand it, a wireless one like MyCloud (https://www.amazon.com/Cloud-Home-P...ywords=my+cloud+wd&qid=1594530181&sr=8-1&th=1) doesn't need to be formatted and will work with both Mac and Windows? Or do you still need to format it to back up timemachine on it?

The mycloud probably comes exfat or ntfs from the factory. However, it isn’t an issue because SMB (how you connect from your Mac to the drive) takes care of that for you.
That’s said, it probably won’t work for Time Machine, since it is very much reliant on Apple file systems.
