Do you really have to remove SIM before selling??

I upgraded one of my lines to buy an Iphone 5 but now I decided so sell to my friend to make a few bucks and I will buy one later once they are back in stock.

My question is, do you really have to remove the SIM if I do not activate it on my account? Can't they just take the phone and SIM and activate on their account?

The sim included inside the iPhone 5 will activate on your account once they turn the phone on. This in turn will de-activate your old sim.

It will deactivate the old SIM, but the old SIM will still have your account info, including phone number. This has been known to cause problems with things like iMessage.

Best to remove the SIM. He can get a new one at an AT&T store.

It's not a huge deal but I have heard of people doing this and wondered if it's truly necessary.
