What will make our MBP's last longer? Sleep mode when not using it or shut off completely?

I put mine to sleep by closing the lid. Longevity by method is debatable, but probably negligible.

I've been putting all of my Mac's to sleep for many years and never have had a problem doing that.

I just shut the lid and send it to sleep on a day-to-day basis. I only plan on shutting it down when I know I'm not going to be using it for a very long time; I just want to avoid that super de-charged battery state, because I know that can be quite detrimental to battery health.

How about neither - I leave it on most times. If I feel so inclined I'll put into sleep mode. The only time it gets shut down is when I'm traveling and its in my bag

there's plenty of argument as to whether power up is more damaging than sleep.

I only power off when I go on vacation and take the MBP on a plane or if I leave the MBP at home.

It depends how long I won't be using it for. If it's a matter of hours then it goes to sleep. But if it's not going to be used for more than one day it gets shut down.

I tend to only shutdown if it is over 5hr of lack of usage. Time to purge the swap file anyways.

I use sleep mode exclusively. Only time I consider shutting it down is when I'm transporting it on a lengthy trip.

always sleep.

probably shutdown once every few months to clean out the caches. though every os release seems less and less necessary.

I've had my MBP for about 30 months and don't recall ever needing to shut it down. I had my previous machine for about 4.5 years and only needed to shut it down for memory upgrades and when flying.

I've had my white unibody MB since early late '09 and only close the lid to put it sleep. It only gets shut down when traveling.

I only shutdown when packing it up for travel, otherwise both stay powered on with the lid open and closed. No sleep.

Sleep mode for me unless I am away on vacation--or when bringing my MacBook on a lengthy trip. Like Shrink, I too close my apps--no reason--just habit. :)

I close all running apps (probably unnecessary, just habit), then shut the lid when I go to bed.

It is indeed completely unnecessary. It may speed up going to sleep a bit because less memory has to be written to disk, and that's about the only advantage you gain from closing all apps.

You take 10 seconds to maybe save 3 on the time-to-sleep. You do the math.
