At this point, surely they won’t?

It would anger a lot of people.

What do you think?

I now have 82 original straps.

They will. They surely will. And at that point certain people will give up upgrading their Apple Watch.

Apple is not known for providing forever compatibility with anything. If the next processor architecture provides astoundingly beautiful improvements, they will ditch ARM in a heart beat. Apple Watch strap won’t raise their eyebrows even the slightest.

I think they would go as long as possible to keep the current design.
But if that absolutely prevented a next generation of bands then they would ditch it.

My guess would be they make the new Watches backwards compatible with current bands if possible, but the new bands would be so much better that you’d want to wear those. I’m thinking some sort of connectivity between the band and the Watch that would enable new features.

I think the magnetic attachment rumor is absurd. There’s no way that would be secure enough. Even if it was, I’d think the strength of the magnets would be so strong that it would dominate the compass of the watch.

I read a good article once about how Apple backed themselves into a corner by not using regular band attachments with pins. At some point, I think people like us, who have lots of and/or expensive bands, will have to swallow a bitter pill. It’s never going to be like buying a nice mechanical watch. It will eventually be disposable.

Apple will definitely change the mechanism whereby the current offered bands will no longer work. It is just a matter of time. I don't think it is wise to purchase a lot of bands unless you plan on keeping the same watch indefinitely.
