An inconspicuous & effective company shill can really do wonders on a forum with enough traffic. They're just usually not that good.
 
I don't think it's the case here, but I've been part of other special interest forums where well-known retailers in the hobby often participated. At least on one photography forum, someone from B&H Photo use to participate. On the MG forum, a product specialist from Moss Motors(the largest parts retailer) participates.

Typically, their relationship/position is obviously identified and their participation is generally welcomed. They don't necessarily solicit business, but rather just participate as any other member and can often provide information that others may not be able to. Indirectly, it can-and no doubt does-lead to increased sales from that retailer.
