I'm curious as to what MacRumours thinks will happen with Touch ID. Will it be specific to the 5S? Or maybe just the iPhone line of devices? Or will it become standard throughout all iOS devices slowly?

I believe it will as cost & availability improve.

yup.

something I think they can do to enhance it would be to require multiple fingerprints in a certain sequence. That would stop thieves from copying fingerprints to get in (not that that's easy to do)...

Maybe aside from the iPod touch and iPad mini?

Front page rumors suggest even the mini are getting it, though.

I think it'll be standard on all "new" iOS devices going forward. The 5C was virtually a 5, thus not really "new".

The iPod Touch might get skimped because it's more of a toy than a tool.

Ok good :D I'm desperately hoping the iPhone 6 will have one as that's the phone I'm holding out for!

Standard on the high end devices, yes. As older devices are phased out everything will end up having it save your iPod Nanos (do they even have those anymore?). Have to amortize the design cost over as many units as possible to maximize the profit. Have to keep the shareholders happy.

as we've seen from all apple releases, it will eventually roll into the iPad line and then the iPod line as component costs go down .

then it is pointless. might as well just keep to the code then. this purpose is to gain fast access and any prints on the phone are more then likely a smudged.

what i would like to see at some point is it being used for banking apps. it just ends to get more secured at some point. I think all new mac devices will see it as some point MBP's as these devices are portable. and it will some how integrate with icloud key...forgot the name already

I would love to see it become standard on all Mac Devices. Touch ID embeded in the lid of the Macbook! Open the screen and it unlocks? Could be cool!

i dont think it would be built into the as much as it being built either into the track pad or close to it. being built in to the track pad and maybe needing two or three fingers to unlock it?

I choose to disagree. With ios devices being as desirable as they are, why wouldn't Apple want to make them all safe, and with the tying in to iTunes and app purchases and what-not it makes sense to provide more harmony across the ios line by adding Touch ID to all of the "major" devices... Which to me includes the iPad mini but not the iPod Touch this year but next year for sure... Only reason I wouldn't include the iPod touch is due to the fact that it's the only thing that is dropping in sales numbers. They can "get away" with not having it this year on iPod Touch but by next year they'd probably add it just to continue with the harmony of ios.
