Hello All,

I have a question as the title says. The reason I ask, with my current 13" 2016 MBP TB I just close the lid place it in a sleeve then a back pack and travel with it for hours, with out ever shutting it down. I never have had an issue with the 13".

Now I have a 15" coming with a Waterfield sleeve. I think there might be more risk with the bigger laptop of confining it while its on? Im not sure if there is a difference in sleep mode between the 13" and 15"?

Do you turn off your 15" MBP when its in a sleeve or bag?

I have (almost) never turned off a laptop when transporting. Left in laptop bags for days while sleeping. The later models, and this is true with my 2013 15-MBP, use almost no power when properly configured. While on leave from my last employer I closed the lid for 90 days at a time and IIRC there was 75% power left when I opened it up again. Check SysPrefs-Energy Saver and turn off Power Nap when on Battery.

I would. The 2018 MBP is notorious for waking up several times in sleep.

I always turn mine off when putting it in a sleeve as some 2018 MBPs have been known to turn itself on and gets very hot.

I always turn my laptop off when I move it more than a few minutes away. I have had too many of them "wake up" in a sleeve or backpack.

I haven't purposely powered off a laptop in the last 12 years outside of powering down to replace a part or just the battery itself dying.

Currently my 2015 12" MacBook has never been powered down since release day, same for the 2016 tbMacBook Pro.

The last laptop I can even remembering shutting down in between uses was a Gateway laptop that I took with me on deployments back in 2000-2004. That thing chewed through several % of battery all the time. I think it lasted maybe an hour and a half on a good day.

Why should a 15" be any different? heat?

I never switched my laptops of for travelling. Air 11"+ 13", MPB 13", MB 12". They don't know if they are just sleeping on your desk or in your bag...

My only thought was how the 13" fans will not run at all for light tasks but the 15" fans run when open at the minimum 2000RPM.

It seems to be a bag of mixed reviews. I guess the issue would be if it wakes up during sleep with the lid closed. It sounds like that has happened to some users.

I turn mine off. I've had it "wake up" before in the case and so I take no chances in having the machine cook itself to death.

That is the issue. MacBooks now have setting like wake for Wifi access, etc. So they are seeing and attempting to connect to Wifi access points as you carry them along. If they only did this while it was on the desk it would not be an issue.

Just make sure it sleeps, before you put it anywhere. I fried my 15" 2010 MBP this way, back in June 2012. Left it running inside a bag for 5 hours with Final Cut open, before noticing. Good thing the Geniuses couldn't figure why afterwards the computer wasn't operating as it should. They replaced it with a new, just released, 15" 2012 MBP for that. Best upgrade ever! :)

You guys have me paranoid now. I never shut down.

Like Newton's Apple says, it only takes one time pulling a red hot laptop out of a bag to make you a believer.

If nothing else, shutting down forces you to save the spreadsheet you edited for hours this morning and did not save, and forgot about while browsing the MacRumors forums.

I try and restart my computer every few weeks or so... however I never shut it off when traveling and unlike many above posters, I've not had one single MBP ever wake from sleep. I guess I've been lucky!
