I have some space left over on my iPod and as I take it everywhere with me, as well as my MacBook, I thought why not use that space as a backup drive for any of my important data files and digital paintings which are still in progress. That way when ever I need access to them I will always have that. I do have a portable hdd, but I'm just thinking about ways of minimalising how much I have to carry around.

Does anyone else do this and what type of stuff do you back up to your iPod (other than the normal Address Book, iCal and Photos)?

I do that, especially for carrying around files that I need for classes. This last year I had a class where we did something on the computer at least once a week, so I just brought my iPod in and hooked it up. It works quite nicely.

I use my 5G 60GB for music and videos only, but I also have an old 2G 20GB which I use exclusively as a firewire external drive for backing up recording sessions etc.

Well since I have a 30GB iPod and a 20GB HD, I can backup everything my computer could ever hold, plus 10GB to spare. I had to do something with all that extra space, even though there's still a lot left. I just backed up the essentials (documents folder, including music) and it's around 11GB + 5 1/2 GB for the stuff my iPod actually uses.

I only use it as a back-up for my music, which kind of happens by default. ;) if anything were ever to happen to my Mac, I'd just se Senuti to restore all my music. Well, not all of my music, but all my favorite music which is obviously what I have on my iPod. ;)

only my top rated songs fit on my 6gb iPod mini. i need to upgrade, but want bigger than a 60gb iPod... still waiting for that mythical 80gb to come out... and then maybe i'll be able to backup some files too.

Only by default. I have it enabled to carry my contacts and everything on there, and it's actually come in handy once...but I don't purposefully put stuff on there to back it up.

i use my iPod for music only... i don't have enough space to use it as backup :/

14.90 GB of music on a 20 GB iPod :D

Paranoid???

You can never have enough backups. My 3G 40GB contains about 26GB of music, plus my entire iPhoto library, plus my brother's entire iPhoto library, just in case. We've also backed-up our home folders on each other's external Lacie HD's.

I use mine as a file transfer and back up between my PC and Mac. I hate though that my video iPod doesn't have a faster transfer option than USB, even my mini could do firewire-i miss it

I just use my iPod video 60GB for music/videos. I have thought of using it as a backup device but I just use dvds instead so I still have space on my iPod.

I don't necessarily use it as part of my backup routine, but if I've got an important project that I'm working on (like a term research paper), I like to back it up in as many places as possible (External HD, USB, iPod).
