Dock always dissapearing?

I have my Dock set to hide when not used. Ocassionally, I will move my mouse cursor to the bottom and the dock will not pop up!

The only way to bring it back is to log off and back into the computer. Anyone know why this happens?

If it doesn't, all I can think off is un-ticking then re-ticking the 'auto-hide' box.

There's a short term fix, the keyboard shortcut for hiding the dock is
OPTION + COMMAND + D.

I've done this and the dock will just freeze in fixed mode.
