Usually, when you open an application in OS X, a dot will appear under the icon for that app in the dock.
I discovered something a few months back, when I began using scripts that would alert me whenever my internet connection was interrupted:
It turns out that it's often the case that when I think I have exited from Safari, and, importantly, Safari is no longer showing as active in the dock, it's still running in the background. I might be working on a Pages document or working in a different browser; the internet connection will fail, and the script triggers an alert. The script will tell me which specific browser(s) is/are currently running. When I then do OPTION-CMD-ESC (force quit applications), I can confirm that Safari actually IS still running, even though the dock doesn't seem to be aware of this (or has chosen to hide this fact from me!).

Anyone else experienced this? And thoughts on how to handle it?
