I'll try to explain this as best I can:

I'm working on making a set of text-only dock icons (no border or anything), but I'm having some trouble maintaing even spacing and sizing.

My main problem is keeping all the icons the same size, but at the same time maintaining equal spacing between icons that have different numbers of characters, i.e. having the space between a icons with 2 and 5 characters be the same as between icons with 5 and 5 characters.

When I try to beat this by making the image size of icons with fewer characters smaller (not the text itself, but just decreasing the empty space around the text), the icon appears physically larger in the dock.

I can't imagine this is terribly complicated, but I just can't wrap my head around it for some reason.

Thanks in advance.
