Well, what's junk to some are great to others. If you click around, you'll find lots of great looking stuff on InterfaceLIFT, as MacGeek7 said, or DeviantArt or many of the other hits on the Google search. It just takes looking through a lot to find what appeals to you.
So, do it and check mentioned web site. The utility called Candybar let you to change icons or customize Dock.
It's only matter of choice and personal preferences. My desktop has brighter colors and Dock has smaller icons. But... look above
Simply set desktop in a way that make yourself comfortable and enjoy.
It's nice. Like mentioned above, it's all a matter of what YOU like. I tend to use my own pics as my background, and my icons are smaller and less conspicuous.

don't you hate how leopard chooses the 1st filefrom the stack and makes this the icon.
What this does is make the container the 1st item and places the files contained inside the folder stacked inside it.
(you have to have everything sorted by modified, or change the name to AAAAAA or whatever comes 1st 0000000?)

Okay, so, you were linked to two different sites, each of which have thousands of free icons available - I'm pretty disinclined to believe you actually investigated these sites in any depth, and just want other users to send you to the good ones. Two tips - first, Google is your friend. Learn how to use it properly (avoiding words like 'free' in the query and such) and what good search results look like and you'll be on your way. Second, finding free resources like icons means a lot of browsing if you're at all picky. You were linked to resource sites, both of which are very useful, so now it's your job to do the browsing.
