is there anyway that i can make it so that no window can cover up the dock or go behind it... sort of like nothing can go below where the dock box starts...?
 
sys prefs> dock
check automatically hide and show the dock. that's what i use. then the dock doesn't show at all unless you nit the bottom of the screen with the cursor.

doesn't take up real estate unless you need it -- then it's always available.

i know it doesn't answer your question exactly, but it works beautifully.

yes, that is what i do too, but i don t know if what you want exactly can be done...i don t htink it can but maybe someoen else knows how to
