Just curious if you guys use Auto Hide Dock and Magnify to improve screen real estate on a 13". I have never and tried it but I can't get used to it. I guess the biggest issue is waiting for it to pop up.

I haven't really used the dock for years, so I have it on hide and magnify on the rare occasion I need it. I command+space for spotlight and command+tab through my open apps, which are on usually six spaces. Sometimes I go completely crazy and hide the menu bar, too.

I will sometimes hide the Dock manually when it needs to be hidden --- depends on my use.
I just hit the keyboard shortcut to toggle Dock hiding - Opt-Cmd-d
I never use magnify, first thing that I turn off, starting from the original OS X beta 17 years ago.

Nope. Never have. I've used a 27" 5K iMac, 15" rMBP, 13" MBA, 13" White MB, 11" MBA and multiple Mac Minis with various different sized monitors... never activated either...

I did experiment with moving the Dock to the left side of the screen several times, but, like you, could not get used to that placement.

Just use the Spotlight option to find/launch apps... ⌘-Spacebar

I use this setup regardless of screen size.

I have tried using auto hide on many machines but can never get used to it. I do make the dock very small and use magnify however.

I have auto hide off and the Dock on the left. The delay in that auto hide drives me nuts and I like being able to see app notifications in the Dock.

Having it on the left solves the real estate issue you mentioned.

I was at the Apple Store today and messed around with MacBook Pro's. I was curious if the unhide delay was faster on the new models. Exactly the same delay if not worse than my setup. It's annoying to wait for the bar to pop up. I'll give the left vertical a try although it just seems weird to see it there. Will take some getting used to.

On an unrelated note, I think I finally decided on whether my next MBP would be 13" or 15", and I think the 15" is just too darn big. I had thought that a new 15" would be an easy transition given the bulk and weight of the unibody older models, but putting the 13" on top of the 15" reveals how much bigger the 15" is, especially the keyboard rest and touch pad area. I can't see myself laying down on the couch with it propped on my lap like I like to do now with my 13". The screen real estate is nice though but not enough of an advantage to overcome the large form factor.

Mine is hidden with Magnify switched on. I use Alfred as a launcher for everything, but it does happen frequently enough that my hand is on the Trackpad already, making the drop down to the bottom to switch apps that much quicker than returning to the keyboard to do the same, so it does see use.

I find it jarring working on my wife's 11" MBA, and see so much screen-space taken up by the Dock - but she finds it jarring when I hide it, so definitely a case of "each to their own"!

Mine is set to auto-hide.

I hit command-space and type a few characters of the app I want, hit return, done! Or just command-tab to cycle through my open apps.

For me, the dock is there to see/open windows I've minimised, not much else.

Like the saying goes, you leant a new thing everyday. I am a former Windows user and I have really missed Alt-Tab. I definitely see Command-Tab as my go to. Thanks!
