When I dock my iPhone, I get inappropriate "device removal" warnings ... and also actual device removals at bad moments that can cause all kind of havoc ...
I'd like to know what to do about this.
I have an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac that has 3 USB ports, and I have each port connected to a USB hub. The hubs connect to a series of devices, most of which are USB hard drives.
One of the hubs has its own power source, and the other two do not. The iPhone dock connector is on the powered hub along with two hard drives and an external optical drive that is typically idle. Those hard drives, like all of my external hard drives, have external power sources.
When I dock the iPhone, typically one of the hard drives that is on one of the other hubs — one of the hubs which does not have its own power source — gets "removed." Typically, the drive is being used at the time, and the process that is using it crashes or does something equally weird.
Usually the affected drive is the one that contains my iTunes library, so iTunes will also start to complain that it cannot save its library.
I'm guessing that docking the iPhone causes some kind of transient power loss to the affected drive(s), so they seem to be "removed" even though they aren't really removed.
I thought connecting the dock to a powered USB hub might cure this, but it didn't help.
I'm wondering whether I need to buy new powered USB hubs to replace my two current hubs that don't receive external power. Before I do that, I thought I would see if anybody else has had this problem and knows a solution. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me ...
