Document Revision feature partition requirements?

I was trying it out with textedit on a truecrypt volume formatted as FAT16 and it told me that it is unsupported when I went to close textedit(it saves the final revision, but not the history). What Kind of partition do I need to enable the document revision feature, preferably one that is windows/linux compatible?
