Question in the title... Does the standard LaCie Rugged 1TB 2.5" USB3/USB2 drive need a power connection or can it be powered through the USB cable?

No it doesn't need a separate connection, although they do usually come with a separate USB power cable. Don't bother buying a USB 3 device for the MBP - extra money for nothing.

As far as I can tell there is a USB2/3 version and a USB/FW version. The USB is a bit cheaper. I will be using it for both TimeMachine backup and transferring files between PCs and the MBP. (different partitions)

I figured it was powered through USB, but it includes a USB->Power cable also. I'd like to power through the data line exclusively.
