I have a 2011 MBP and have been considering using my external Dell U2711 monitor with it. I was going to use mode switching but then I remembered that I have a touch screen monitor for the PC that I haven't been using because it's only 1080p and 2560 X 1440 is so much better. However, I could live with it if I could use the 27" with my MBP and be able to keep it closed without damaging anything. Heck, if there was a way, I'd consider using the 24" touch screen with the MBP. I don't think my MBP has DisplayPort, but I don't know what it looks like. I do know that is has Thunderbolt though.
