Does the verizon iphone 5 which is a non contract one (650$) I bought today from an Apple store work in another country (India) with a local carrier?

If yes, do I need to activate it with verizon or can I directly activate it in another country?

Yes, it will work fine anywhere with any gsm carrier.
You can activate it Later in India.
Not a prob.

Are you sure?

The guy at the apple store told me that it needs to be activated by Verizon and will work in another country only if Verizon unlocks it. I remember reading that Verizon's iphone 5 models are unlocked!

I'm very sure.
The guy gave you wrong information. What he told you it's true for a verizon iPhone 4S but for the i5 it's a different story.
All verizon i5 models are fully unlocked for gsm use.
It doesn't need to be activated with verizon at all.

I just bought a Verizon iPhone 5 without contract, so do I have to activate it with verizon to use it on straight talk?
