Just wondered if I'll get a larger effective signal range using an Extreme base station rather than the Express I've been using up till now? Or is the difference only in the wireless speed rather than the actual signal range?

I think the N standard gives you longer range, in addition to the speed. Mine has been great.

AirPort Extreme does have more range, the box says 150 feet, versus the Express saying 50 feet. Using logic, Express is smaller, with probably one antenna, and Extreme is wider, bigger, with multiple antennnas. ones just a small box the size of a laptop pwer adapter and the other is the Base Station.
