I want to get it from Amazon, so that I can avoid almost 10% sales tax that I'd have to pay if I were to buy it from apple.com (I live in SF, aka highest sales tax in the country)

but does amazon always do preorders, for iPad?
I am willing to wait few extra days - beyond the launch date...
if Amazon WILL carry it

so.. do they always do pre orders, or at least get the new iPads fairly close to the launch date ?

Has Amazon had the first two iPads for sale on release day, or close to release day? Got a lot of credit at Amazon so I want to get one there.

Are they normally the same price on amazon? I sold my iPad 1 to them so I have a lot of amazon credit

From my experience, no. I'm in the same boat as you. I ordered the iPad 2 from J&R last time, no tax charged, but it took weeks to deliver. I'm ordering direct this time.

I don't remember Amazon ever selling the ipads directly. Hosting third party sellers, yes, but then you're likely into post-launch.

Amazon has never sold iPads or iPhones. Any iPads on their site are from third parties.
