Is the iPad very fragile and thus needing extra protection?

Depends on your usage and your own susceptibility to drops and clumsiness

The iPad is very sturdy
I used to use a BookBook for my iPad and then I switched to just a leather SmartCover

Now I am using the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard as a cover for the screen

It doesn't have to have any case
But you may like to have one for throwing it in bag

Sometimes I use the smart cover with mine, sometimes the Maroo leather case and sometimes nothing at all. Usually if I am at home, it's no case or the smart cover. When I leave someplace with it, usually it's the Maroo just in case I were to drop it or something.

Well the aluminum gets scratched easily so a case would help but it's not necessary. A smart cover though is a must have in my opinion :)

Not sure it needs a case, but I like protecting the screen when not in use and a case makes is less slippery . . .

I think it's a good idea to have a case on it. The Incipio Feather case is my favorite because it's very thin (something like 2mm thick) and is pretty durable. Plus it's compatible with the Smart Cover and actually keeps it clipped in so it doesn't fall off.

depends on how you use it. when i used mine at home it was never in a case. out and about i'd put it into a case.

Case protects, makes it less slippery and props it for reading. We went with slim, form-fitting cases a year ago and love them. I recommend cases.

The main reason that I use a smartcover is as a stand. The added protection is a bonus.

nice hard shell at the back for better grip (and protection) plus Smart Cover as I like the magnets switch off the screen to save energy.
and recently added again a mate foile to reduce the effects of fingerprints.

Ragarding the fragility,
The glass is glass. It will break, crack, or shatter if dropped.
Don't drop it and you shouldn't have any problems.
Failing that invest in an AppleCare+ or Squaretrade warranty.
The aluminum is very tough and strong but the design unfortunately has sharp corners that will get dinged. The aluminum is so thin at the edges that plastic is enough to ding it.
If you care more about keeping your iPad looking perfect even though it will still be functioning perfect then yes, you need a case.

I alao got a case for the grip

If you can handle electronics without dropping them, then get a smart cover and you're good. Don't get a piece of plastic to put over the glass. This has served me well.

It really depends on how you will use it. I haven't picked up a case yet (still deciding) but I do have a sleeve I carry in. Sometimes I can see using a smart cover for when I need to set it up.
