I think I probably fall in the windows for the day for work, and Mac for the night for fun kind of guy. Wondering if a new high spec'd macbook pro with 5600m and 4tb SSD (1tb windows and 3tb mac) would do as my only machine? It would be hooked up to two monitors.

My other choice would be to have a Dell desktop i5-9700 with a 2080 super for day work, and macbook pro 16 with 5500m and 1tb SSD for my fun stuff. Prices for both setups would be comparable.

What do you think? Which route would make you happier?

It'll work, but battery will be bad since Windows always uses the dedicated GPU. Also the trackpad drivers are basic which means no Windows gestures.

While using as a PC, it'll likely be plugged into an external monitor, so I suppose both of those issues would be taken care of? It would be too bad if the fans spun loud all day long. I'll have to look into that.

Also there's are trackpad drivers that fix everything in windows if you look trackpad + and on GitHub have the best

Negative- I ran Windows in a VM on occasion for testing purposes but that's it.

I encounter a number of IT professionals running Windows (via bootcamp) and Linux as well on Mac hardware so it is certainly an option. Quite expensive in terms of hardware compared to buying a big name manufacturer laptop like Dell, HP or Lenovo and I'd bet driver support may also be better in that scenario.

I use a desktop with 2070s running either Windows 10 or Ubuntu. It is blazing fast task and was relatively cheap with 32 GB, 9900K, 2 TB SSD. It is my main machine and runs silently thanks to the massive heatsinks and quiet Noctua fans.

I also have a 16" MBP and 2020 13" for portable usage. They are OK and I like MacOS, but cannot hold a candle to the desktop in heavy work. And as documented the 16" fans spin up if you use external monitors. Personally fan noise does not bother me (I have Bose QC 35s on often), but if you are the type that it does be sure to factor that into your selection.
